Herons
Tuesdays | 9:00 am to 3:30 pm | Ages 9-13 yrs
Herons is the program where children engage with all aspects of the natural environment and build confidence and independence through a variety of inquiry-based activities. They explore how ecosystems work with a different focus each day to fulfill their curiosity and develop their understanding. While guiding themselves and their peers through a variety of activities, children dig deeper into how their skills and knowledge can have an impact on shaping the world.
Our days are filled with stories that inspire, games that teach, and activities to probe further exploration. We also focus on imparting hard skills like starting a fire, orienteering, and shelter building. In every program we support personal development skills like self-sufficiency, problem solving, cooperation, and teamwork.

We are located on over 300 spectacular acres along the shores of Lake Scugog. Our property includes cedar groves, old growth hardwood forests, a meadow and protected wetlands including a vibrant swamp and more than 1,000 feet of beautiful shoreline. It is an ideal setting for children to interact with the natural world, and although most of our time is spent outdoors, we do have a variety of indoor spaces available as needed.
Our home base, The Old Barn, is where the day will always start and end with circle time, where lunch is had and where self-guided play is enjoyed. The Old Barn also houses the Nature Museum, a place to display all collected finds from throughout the day at Nature School.
